HUD Notice: Assessing a Person’s Request to Have an Animal as a Reasonable Accommodation Under the Fair Housing Act

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) published this notice to clarify how housing providers can comply with the Fair Housing Act when assessing a person’s request to have an animal to provide assistance because of a disability.

The new guidance will help housing providers, health care professionals providing supporting documentation, and individuals with disabilities understand the process of making and considering requests involving animals, including the information that a person may need to provide about his or her disability-related need for accommodation.
