Organizations

Disability Justice Initiative

2026 Status: Active

This advocacy organization promotes public policies that ensure disabled people of color and other marginalized groups can participate in the economy and democracy. The Initiative, a project of the Center for American Progress, also develops research, policy analyses, and messaging tools to raise awareness of challenges that multiply marginalized disabled individuals face.

National Black Disability Coalition (NBDC)

2026 Status: Active

This organization works to promote disability equity in the Black community. Their website features news, stories, and podcast episodes.

Rooted in Rights: Race and Disability

2026 Status: Active

This organization produces accessible videos, documentary pieces, blogs, trainings, resources, and events to advance self-determination of people with disabilities. The Race and Disability collection highlights the intersections of race and disability identity through authentic narratives and reporting.

Disability Visibility Project

2026 Status: Active

This organization works to create, share, and amplify disabled voices and record disability history. The website features essays, reports, blog posts, art, and more. The organization is also active on social media.

The Disability & Philanthropy Forum

2026 Status: Active

This organization works to dismantle ableism within philanthropy by supporting peer networks and amplifying the leadership of disabled people. The organization’s website features a curated learning module on race and disability, as well as a variety of resources, articles, and podcast episodes, including collections on disability and intersectionality, race and disability, and gender, sexuality and disability.

Borealis Philanthropy: Racial, Gender, and Disability Justice

2026 Status: Active

Borealis Philanthropy is a philanthropic intermediary dedicated to advancing intersectional justice. The organization supports the Black Disabled Liberation Resource Hub, which offers tools and resources for funders and changemakers.

The Autistic People of Color Fund

2026 Status: Active

This organization provides microgrants to Black, Brown, Native, Asian, and mixed-race people in the autistic community. Additionally, their website features editorial articles, policy briefs and statements, and resources.

Black, Disabled, and Proud: College Students with Disabilities

2026 Status: Active

This project, which began as the HBCU Disability Consortium (see below), is now based at the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD). The group conducts research and offers resources for students, families, and professionals working in higher education.

HBCU Disability Consortium

2026 Status: Inactive

This project, which ended in 2015, involved a group of colleagues working in disability services at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Colleges and Universities (PBCUs). The site does include personal stories and a bibliography of books and articles related to race and disability issues in higher education.

World Organization on Disability

2026 Status: Active

This organization, based in the United States, works to advance opportunities for the more than one billion people with disabilities around the globe. Their “What’s Up WID” Podcast and Blog include a variety of episodes and posts focused on disability and intersectionality issues.
